Former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno has yet to speak publicly about his preference in the state GOP chairmanship battle, but he is privately informing allies that he's leaning toward Niagara County Chairman Henry Wojtaszek.
A source close to Bruno confirmed that the former Rensselaer County lawmaker-turned-lobbyist has spoken to both Wojtaszek and his rival, Ed Cox, and while he likes both contenders, he thinks the "time has come for some new blood".
Quote:
"If you had to choose between Dick Nixon and Rudy Giuliani, which one would you pick?" the source said when asked for an explanation of Bruno's logic. "Ed is a nice guy, who his name is associated with Nixon's; and what is Nixon's name associated with?"
(That would be Watergate, of course.).
This isn't the first time I've heard some murmurs of concern from Republicans about the wisdom of hitching their wagon to someone with longstanding ties to the "old GOP".
Democrats, on the other hand, are licking their chops for a chance to exploit the Cox-Nixon connection.
