For Bloomberg Puerto Rico Gov. Luis G. Fortuño is the latest non-New York City elected official to endorse Mayor Bloomberg's bid for a third term - a move designed to help the mayor woo the all-important Latino vote. In a statement released by the Bloomberg campaign, Fortuño called the mayor an "honest and independent leader who can make the tough, necessary decisions that will create jobs, keep the streets safe and continue the strides in education that have been made over the last few years." Quote: "New York also needs a leader who understands the diverse nature of the city, appreciates how invaluable it is, and works to ensure this diversity," Fortuño added. "When it comes to Latinos, Mayor Bloomberg wants to make sure that all of us are heard." In 2005, Bloomberg's Democratic opponent, Freddy Ferrer, received the lion's share of the Latino vote. But in the most recent Q poll, Bloomberg was leading Comptroller Bill Thompson among Hispanic voters, 44-34, while Thompson had the edge with black voters, 56-30. The Puerto Rican segment of the Latino community is particularly sought after by elected officials because of the island's commonwealth status, which makes its residents eligible to vote here in the US. The Bloomberg campaign's press release notes the mayor urged President Obama in July to reform federal policies that adversely affect Puerto Rican residents, such as the requirement that the island pay 80 percent of its Medicaid costs. The release doesn't mention the fact that Fortuño is a Republican - the first to be elected to his position since 1968, in fact, when he won the November 2008 election with the largest margin of victory in the island's 44-year history. He's also pro-statehood - a rather sticky topic that US electeds generally try to avoid when campaigning on the island.
