Ask Know Your Meme and 'Weird Al' Love it or hate it, but mostly hate it, Auto-Tune is a sainted viral phenomenon for net-addicted post-millennials who ache to be robots. Evidently, it’s still not too tired to deserve an online mock-doc, courtesy of Rocketboom’s mad scientists at Know Your Meme, and visiting professor “Weird Al” Yankovic. Auto-Tune is so inherently self-mocking that even the spoof king, whose career-spanning two-disc opus The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic arrived in October, has to chill on Know Your Meme’s back-burner as its white-coated goofs break down the pitch-correction catastrophe for internet culture vultures. But if you break down Auto-Tune with studied clarity, and crack wise on it the whole way, is it still funny? Is it educational? Better yet, will it ever go away? No, says Know Your Meme. Rather, Auto-Tune will go through stages, like anything on death’s door, all of them ending in an equilibrium where the audio-sweetening technology takes its place as an inextricable part of the 21st century’s cultural code.
