In the same week, she appeared at a summit in Ogdensburg on invasive species and the threat they pose to the maple syrup industry with Sen. Chuck Schumer (Tuesday) and an economic roundtable in Fulton hosted by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (today). In both cases, Scozzafava was invited to participate by the senators, as her campaign spokesman, Matt Burns, noted in the following e-mail sent to reporters this morning: Quote: "Earlier this week, Dede was invited by Senator Schumer to participate in an event in St. Lawrence County (see details below). Today, Dede is participating in an economic roundtable with U.S. Senator Gillibrand in Fulton in Oswego County. " "Dede looks forward to joining the Senator to discuss Dede's top priority: How to bring more jobs to upstate New York." "Dede being asked to participate in this event - even though it's not being held in her current Assembly District - is another sign leaders from all political parties see Dede as a solid partner in the fight to create jobs and improve the area's economy." Burns attached a Watertown Times story that quoted Schumer saying the Democrats' strongest candidate in NY-23 would have been Sen. Darrel Aubertine, who took a pass on the race, and refusing to handicap the contest now that the party's candidate is Bill Owens, who is far less well-known and not even a Democrat. Owens, as far as I can tell, didn't get any invites from Gillibrand and Schumer. Outgoing state Democratic Chairwoman June O'Neill, who lives in St. Lawrence County, told me I shouldn't read too much into the fact that Schumer and Gillibrand asked Scozzafava, who is under fire from the Conservative Party and its candidate, Republican Doug Hoffman, for being too moderate, to attend their respective events.
