When Audi announced its 2009 motorsports plans at the Essen Motor Show in Germany last week, one aspect was left out, the American Le Mans Series program. The debut of the new R15 TDI that will replace the three-year-old R10 will happen at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March. Unfortunately for ALMS fan,s that will be the last time we see the R15 on American tracks in 2009. The only other race planned for the R15 is at Le Mans in June. Aside from those two races, Audi will run its newly redesigned A4 in the DTM series and the R8 LMS in the GT3 sports car class.
Audi Motorsport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich cited the current tough economic times as part of the reason for pulling out of the ALMS. The press release notes that there will be no factory representation. However, it's not clear if the existing R10s will be made available to any other teams such as the Champion Racing team that has been running the cars with factory support in recent years.
